Eating Out in Liverpool

Whether you are hungry for a traditional roast, fancy a tapas or tortilla, or want to experience Mongolian or Caribbean cuisine, Liverpool will not disappoint. The city is a great place to dine as the region maintains its ability to surprise visitors and locals with fresh ideas and creative dishes, whilst not forgetting the traditional foods and cuisine that remain firm favourites.

Visitors to Liverpool will be pleasantly surprised by its extensive range of restaurants and array of excellent food and fine dining in remarkable surroundings. The city centre is dynamic and has a great mixture of dining and eating out opportunities. If you want to explore the surrounding areas of Merseyside, then head to nearby Southport, St Helens and Wirral for even more dining venues.

Said to be Liverpool's most famous national dish is 'Scouse' which is traditionally a lamb stew served with beetroot or red cabbage served with white bread. Originally eaten by sailors they are responsible for bringing the recipe to Liverpool from Norway and Denmark.

Here are just some of the most favoured restaurants in the city to look out for. Simply Heathcotes has apparently taken the town by storm, as Liverpudlians flock here in large numbers especially at weekends. Located on Beetham Plaza, the impressive glass and granite building represents Liverpool's Capital of Culture award with marble floors and black and white colours. Serving a selection of British and European dishes including black pudding, pan fried Goosnargh chicken livers on toast, poached organic salmon, or char grilled Curwen Hill rump steak.

60 Hope Street has everything, from its unique location in the heart of the University quarter, a chic design of bare wood, and delicious imaginative food. Try the seared fillet of Szechuan tuna with herb polenta and chilli jam or cannon of lamb with crispy spinach risotto cake and red wine jus, keep room for the mouth-watering chocolate, pistachio, almond and pear Italian torte or classic sticky toffee pudding and fudge ice cream.

The Monro is subtle, comfortable and low key, using only fresh supplies and, in some cases, organic. Dishes to look out for include the Welsh lamb rump, wild goose and duck, Devon mussels and crab, Northwich rabbit pie, Cheshire wild boar, Lancashire ostrich and Ayrshire steak. You can sample the famous Scouse Stew here but don't ask them for the recipe as it is a highly guarded house secret.

The traditional Roses Tea Rooms has won multi awards for its top quality beverages, including Cheshire farm milkshakes, organic English juices and Artisan hot chocolates. Their food is of the highest quality, fresh, local where possible and only organic milk is used. They hate and detest preservatives additives and any processed products. Daily specials such as stews, casseroles, pies, quiches and bakes are featured, whilst on the standard menu you will see such dishes as Grilled dry cured bacon topped with farmhouse cheddar cheese and homemade coleslaw.

The Bluecoat is a great place to enjoy wholesome, home-made seasonal food and has a good wine list to complement the food. Jing leaf teas, Monbana hot chocolate and a range sandwiches, salads, homemade cakes and biscuits are available. Located in The Hub, The Bluecoat is known for being one of the most iconic creative buildings in the city, they have a fantastic Sunday lunch menu and weekends is family time where children can explore the galleries and then stop by the Hub to make a piece of artwork of their own with help and guidance from local artists.
