Liverpool at a Glance

In 2004, Liverpool's Dock Front was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the same status as given to the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids and the Statue of Liberty; in 2008 it was voted European Capital of Culture for its range of creative cultural attractions. A diverse and inspiring city, Liverpool has something to offer for everyone. Renown not only for its culture but also its maritime history, football, festivals, such as the lively Mathew Street Festival, and musicians’, the most famous of all The Beatles who still draw in tourists from all over the world.

Formerly one of the biggest ports in Britain, Liverpool was an important centre for merchants and traders travelling to far off destinations. Although there remains a freight shipping industry in the city even today, most of the original docks have now been turned into apartments, offices, and entertainment and retail venues. The Merseyside Maritime Museum on the Albert Dock is a great place to discover more about the city’s history. Whilst there, take a leisurely walk around the waterfront and gape at the wonderful  ‘Three Graces’, The Royal Liver, Cunard and Port of Liverpool Buildings, and Pier Head, find out their history from the city's museums, free to everyone. Don’t miss out on taking a trip aboard the ferry to cross the Mersey.

Liverpool's dedication to art is reflected in the Tate and Walker galleries and other innovative areas and sculptures. There are more museums and art galleries than most UK cities, and if you are interested in the city’s history, arts and culture there is sure to be something that surprises and delights.
A great place to bring the family whether it is for a short break or just a day trip, Liverpool has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere with family entertainment taking priority. Take the kids to ‘Underwater Street’ in the waterfront Cunard Building where there is a brilliant kids' science and discovery centre.

The city centre has all the well-known High Street stores that can be found in most UK cities and more, and for a city with such musical success you can anticipate an impressive, sundry and energetic nightlife. Liverpool has become a mecca for music lovers all over the world, mainly thanks to The Beatles, you can find all the history and memorabilia recorded down at the Albert Dock. However, plenty of other musical talent has emerged from the Merseyside scene, including Echo and the Bunnymen, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Atomic Kitten, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Farm, and more recently the Zutons and The Coral.

Liverpool has starred in plenty of films and television series for its historic streets, interesting city centre area and imposing architecture. It even has the title of 'Britain's most filmed city outside London'. Willy Russell the British playwright, lyricist and composer most famous for 'Shirley Valentine', 'Blood Brothers' and Shirley Valentine was born here along with the eccentric Ken Dodd who was born in Knotty Ash. Cilla Black, the television personality and singer, famously worked as a coat check attendant at the Cavern Club where the Beatles played before hosting Surprise Surprise and Blind Date, and Holly Johnson, the lead singer of Liverpool band 'Frankie Goes to Hollywood' was a huge international success in the ’80s with hits 'Relax' and 'Two Tribes'.

Liverpool is also a good base from which to explore the beauty of the coastline and surrounding countryside. In the surrounding areas are the sweeping beaches and dunes of Sefton and the Wirral Peninsula, perfect to explore on a fine day. Stop off at a small rural village for scones and an English cup of tea.
