In 2004, Liverpool's Dock Front was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the same status as given to the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids and the Statue of Liberty; in 2008 it was voted European Capital of Culture for its range of creative cultural attractions. Willy Russell the British playwright, lyricist and composer most famous for 'Shirley Valentine', 'Blood Brothers' and Shirley Valentine was born here along with the eccentric Ken Dodd who was born in Knotty Ash. Cilla Black, the television personality and singer, famously worked as a coat check attendant at the Cavern Club where the Beatles played before hosting Surprise Surprise and Blind Date, and Holly Johnson, the lead singer of Liverpool band 'Frankie Goes to Hollywood' was a huge international success in the ’80s with hits 'Relax' and 'Two Tribes'.

Liverpool is also a good base from which to explore the beauty of the coastline and surrounding countryside. In the surrounding areas are the sweeping beaches and dunes of Sefton and the Wirral Peninsula, perfect to explore on a fine day.
